aesthetic vs. philosophical

For January 24, I asked this: "What does the word Victorian mean to you? Does it call to mind any particular images, ideas, or values?" Looking back on the semester's work, has the meaning of the word Victorian changed for you? If so, how? If not, how has the semester's work confirmed what you already thought about the Victorians?

aesthetic vs. philosophical

At the beginning of the semester I mostly focused on images I had of the Victorian era. I associated the word “Victorian” with old houses in my home town. When I think about the question of what the word Victorian connotes I mostly think about several of the philosophical texts we have read this semester that connect with over arching Victorian themes. (Mainly the writings by Carlyle on Mill.) I now see the era as one full of questions about faith, class, feminism, and identity. In many ways I see the concerns of the Victorians deeply connected with contemporary topics. In short my views of the era have transitioned from more aesthetic to philosophical ones.
