Ending of Great Expectations

I wanted to comment that I couldn't believe Joe and Biddy got married. Did anyone else think this was a surprise or was I blindsided by this the same way I was blindsided by Paul dying in Dombey and Son? What is the point of them getting married? I guess I assumed Pip would return and marry Biddy, but that would be too romantic and contrived, I suppose for Dickens.
