Happiness

Diogenes Teufelsdröckh, the protagonist of Carlyle's fictional autobiography Sartor Resartus, is a young man trying to figure out how to live in the modern world. This effort forces him to confront some basic philosophical questions. Try to identify one of these questions in your own words. How do you think Teufelsdröckh answers it?

Happiness

Teufelsdrockn seems to feel that there are too many obstactles in the way of him and his happiness. He presents himself at a loss and with only a
pessimistic outlook on his life. It appears that he is very isolated from the outside world and other human beings. Although, he does mention friendship and friends. However, he says "the men and women around me, even speaking with me, were but Figures; I had, practically forgotten that they were alive" (p.1009).

I agree that Teufelsdrockh has a pessimistic view of the world and keeps himself isolated from others. He is a pessimistic character because he believes that there is something more important than happiness because happiness cannot be reached by human beings. Teufelsdrockh seems to be wrapped up in his philosophical thoughts regarding sprituality and ridding oneself of materialistic notions that he ultimately isolates himself from others.
